St Joseph’s Cathedral Conservation Appeal

17 October, 2023

A Word from Bishop Michael

At the centre of the Diocese of Rockhampton, St Joseph’s Cathedral is a place for the Diocesan family to gather for major events, including ordinations and other special celebrations. The cathedral was built by my predecessors and opened over 140 years ago. The sanctuary was extended 40 years ago in 1983, and the stained-glass windows added at the time completed the Gospel scenes in the main body of the cathedral.

Your help is needed

Upkeep and preservation of St Joseph’s Cathedral is a costly expense. From 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023, the Diocese incurred costs of $173,000. With insurance costs rising sharply and ongoing repairs and maintenance, annual costs are expected to exceed $700,000 per annum. Due to its age and general wear and tear, the cathedral undergoes regular inspections, repairs, and maintenance. These costs, along with insurance, are significant, and the Diocese needs your support to conserve the cathedral for future generations as one of Queensland’s major historical landmarks.

We ask you to give generously to ensure that St Joseph’s Cathedral continues to serve as a vibrant and visible symbol of the Catholic faith in central Queensland. The Appeal will be officially held across the Diocese the weekend of 11-12 November 2023.
