News from the Capricorn Coast

23 October, 2024

Members of St Vincent de Paul and other parishioners, gathered on St Vincent de Paul feast day for Mass at Sacred Heart Church. On this occasion, Diocesan SVDP President, Peter Doherty, was present for the Induction Ceremony of the new President of the Yeppoon Conference John Grimes. The SVDP candle was handed over by past President – Vicki McCosker, who was thanked for her time as President. We thank all the members of SVDP for their amazing ministry amongst our people and community.

September 7th brought our monthly shared meal at Mary Immaculate and on the following morning, Sacred Heart gathered for morning tea.

Kevin Hogan, one of our parishioners, was thanked by Benevolent Living, for his exceptional service as Chairman of their Board. Kevin had dedicated 15 years to their organisation with 12 of those serving as Chairman. Kevin was presented with a special commission piece of artwork from a local artist, for his exceptional service and for leaving a lasting legacy. Congratulations Kevin!!

On September 21st, we said farewell to Sr Grace Bartolo, as she leaves our community on the Capricorn Coast and heads to Rockhampton. At the end of Mass, Fr Matthew said a blessing over Grace and then the congregation sang the Blessing Song, and a few tears were shed. During the previous week, some of the ladies of the parish took Grace out for a very enjoyable time over lunch. We would like to thank you Grace, for your kind, gentle presence and for your wisdom and friendship. You will be sadly missed at all our gatherings.  Almost twenty-one years ago a decision was made for Sr Grace Bartolo to move to the lovely Emu Park.  At the time, Sr Grace was involved in organising retreats for the Sisters and others at both the Haven and the Mercy holiday house at Zilzie.  It was seen to be convenient for Sr Grace to be closer at hand and hence the decision for the move.  Sr Grace was also involved in some Spiritual Direction and Retreat giving at the time. Though Sr Grace didn’t have any official ministry in the parish, it was really important for her to immerse herself in the life of the parish as much as possible. She did this by participating in groups such as the Little Rock scripture groups that were happening and continued this kind of involvement where possible.  In the days when we participated in Liturgy of the Word with Communion, Grace offered to lead when required.  Being committed to ministries such as Minister of Communion, taking Communion to the sick and housebound and Proclaimer of the Word, were important ways of being of service to the Parish.  Grace has always seen her ministry, as sharing as much as possible, the gifts and blessings she has received, with all she come in contact.

It is always a sad time when we say farewell to our Year 12 students from our schools. On Monday October 14th, St Ursula’s College and parishioners, said farewell to the students at a Graduation Mass at Sacred Heart Church. We wish you all the very best for your future and remember God loves each one of you unconditionally and is always walking right by your side.

One of our parishioners – Jack Pickett, has just celebrated one of those special birthdays – Very Happy 80th Birthday Jack. We pray you enjoy many more to come.
