Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Celebrations
21 July, 2025
Sr Cecilia Prest (Prestashewsky) MFIC
On the 5th July, we celebrated Mass in Woorabinda where Sr Cecilia Prest received a ‘NATSICC Service to Community Award’ to acknowledge her time spent in community journeying alongside our First Nation peoples in Woorabinda for the last 23 years. Bishop Michael presided over this Mass with Fr Kingsley from Blackwater.
The citation given by NATSICC read:
Living in the Woorabinda community since 2002, Sr Cecilia has been a steady, compassionate presence. Her ministry touches all parts of life—visiting the sick, comforting the grieving, leading liturgies, running an op-shop, and simply being a listening ear for those in need. Guided by a mission to be “a presence,” she embodies reconciliation, healing, and accompaniment. Her humility and gentle spirit have built trust with the community, and her home has become a place of welcome, solace, and hope. Through Sr Cecilia’s efforts, Woorabinda’s story has reached the wider Church, drawing support and fostering deeper connections.
We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support and Gospel-centred witness of Sr Cecilia. Their work reminds us that true reconciliation is built on relationships, presence, and shared faith.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mass
On Sunday 6th July, we celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday at the Cathedral and the Mass was livestreamed. Bishop Michael presided and we gathered after Mass for fellowship and cake.
