Lights of Christmas – a spectacular success

16 February, 2024

Bishop Michael McCarthy and the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton hosted a very successful Lights of Christmas Spectacular at St Joseph’s Cathedral from 17 to 23 December last year.

The Lights of Christmas featured a spectacular light display being projected onto the beautiful, historic St Joseph’s Cathedral from 7:30pm to 10:30pm every evening in the week leading up to Christmas.

For three years from 2017 until COVID intervened, the Lights of Christmas Spectacular had captivated the people of Rockhampton with its enchanting beauty, and it was very exciting to see it return in 2023.

Large crowds were attracted to the Cathedral each evening to see the Lights of Christmas Spectacular. It was heart-warming to see so many families and members of our aged community come together to see a show that captured the joyful spirit of the Christmas season.

The Lights of Christmas used state of the art projection technology, to produce a Christmas themed animated 3D show, using the century old heritage listed St Joseph’s Cathedral architecture as the creative canvas for this remarkable event.

Lights of Christmas Committee Chair, Mr Rob Alexander praised the amazing technical expertise and experience of Illuminart Australia who once again were engaged to project the Lights of Christmas on to the Cathedral. “Illuminart have done an outstanding job in previous years, and we were delighted to have access to their talent and creativity to provide a spectacular Lights of Christmas for our community” Mr Alexander said.

The Lights of Christmas is a free community event that could not be staged without the generous support of Sponsors. The Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton sincerely thanks Event Partner, CatholicCare CQ and the other Sponsors including Catholic Education, The Cathedral College, Emmaus College, Catholic Primary Schools in the Rockhampton/Gracemere area (St Peter’s, St Joseph’s, Wandal, St Joseph’s Park Avenue, St Mary’s, St Anthony’s, and St Paul’s), Rockhampton Regional Council, SMR Lawyers, Frenchville Sports Club, Bravus Mining and Resources, QMAG and Tony Madden Architects.

The Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton is looking forward to partnering with its valued Sponsors again in 2024 to stage the Lights of Christmas Spectacular and thus help share the joyful spirit of the Christmas season with the Rockhampton community.
