A stake in our future

Students from The Cathedral College are connecting with a wide range of agricultural leaders breaking open their potential future in the industries that feed and clothe us. Over 150 students signed up to TCC AgConnect Program, an extracurricular initiative, to listen and learn from leaders in agriculture particularly cattle and farming.
Launched at the start of Term 2 students engaged in cattle training at ‘Hastings Yards’ with Mr Shannon Coombs, heard from National Stud Judge Renee Rutherford, leading veterinary surgeon Dr Bridget Newman and had an eye-opening hands-on session with Bryan Hall spaying cattle, preg testing and learning about the reproductive system.
A visit to CQLX Gracemere Saleyards for a Tour and a Sale was a definite highlight, along with a yards session with Halls Transport on handling livestock, with the a tour of the Teys Meatworks next term sure to be popular for both the Day and Boarding students involved in the program.
Students toured Foxwell Cotton Farm and next term will be visiting Dynamic Eggs and Riverton Macadamia Farm as well as being offered a field trip to a hydroponic vegetable farm, a local Bee Farm and listening to guest presenters from organisations including the Fitzroy Basin.
TCC AgConnect Coordinator Mrs Sarah Coombs said the response to this unique opportunity from both students and agricultural leaders has been absolutely wonderful. “There is so much energy and positivity in learning and sharing knowledge, interest and passion about producing food and fibre. It’s a stake in our future and I’m thrilled to be a part of it,” she said.
