20 June, 2023Flowers of May
“Flores de Mayo” – Flowers of May is an annual celebration of the Marian day in honour of Our Blessed Mother Mary, inspired by the overseas born Catholics in our Diocese who bring the richness of their tradition into our Catholic family.
Leading up to the Sunday, 28th May, is a 9-day Novena of the Holy Rosary conducted by various Prayer Brigades among families in our Diocese, concluding with the 9.30 am Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral.
Bishop Michael McCarthy presided over the celebration and invited everyone to join the Flowers of May in honour of Our Lady. The statue of our Blessed Mother Mary was carried in a procession around the grounds of the Cathedral, ending at the Corso. Our young people and their families offered flowers to the Blessed Mother, while the various community groups sang a Song to Mary in their own language.
As we celebrated this beautiful faith tradition, the parishioners lent colour to the occasion by wearing their national costume and sharing some of their native delicacies for everyone to enjoy.
Feast of Our Lady at OLHC
On Friday 26th May, Our Lady Help of Christians celebrated the Feast Day of Our Lady Help of Christians with a full school Mass with parishioners where we were blessed to have Fr Alex preside, assisted by Fr Raju and Seminarian Mr Peter Doherty.
Fr Alex gave a beautiful reflection during his Homily about this own mother and family from India, which was received with warmth and gratitude by the children of St Joseph school and parishioners alike.
A big thank you to Elizabeth Carter, APRE at St Joseph’s School for her effort and involvement of the children in the Liturgy .
