Bishop Michael shares a recent offer on the Gospels from retired Bishop David Walker.
Dear Fellow Bishops,
Since my retirement in 2013, I have been exercising my ministry by helping the faithful to engage in a prayerful reading of the Scriptures. The Scriptures have always been important for me and I have had many opportunities to help me in this ministry. In 1971, as a member of the theological faculty at Manly, I studied in London and gained a Masters degree in New Testament. In 2008 I represented the ACBC at the bishops’ Synod on the Word. The document issued by the Pope after the Synod was Verbum Dei, carrying on the recommendation of the Vatican Council’s Dei Verbum to encourage the reading of the Scriptures by the faithful. In 2008, I became the ACBC representative of the Catholic Biblical Federation, a Vatican committee responsible to the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity. In that time I served for many years on the central committee led by the now Cardinal Luis Tagle. The central committee coordinated the work of over a hundred centers in the world fostering the reading of the Scriptures by the faithful.
In retirement, for nine years I have been producing a weekly reflection video on the gospel for each Sunday. It has over two thousand subscribers; and can be found at lectiodivina.com.au website.
I am now beginning a new venture, “Journey Through the Gospels with Bishop David”. This programme is free and will be made available to a wide audience. It will involve a weekly video access to the Gospel, accompanied by a live online discussion every Saturday 4:00-5:00pm. These will be recorded for those who are unable to attend the live sessions. This gives participants a chance to ask questions, share reflections and seek further clarification about the Gospel.
