ACSL audit shows Rockhampton Diocese building a strong safeguarding culture
11 February, 2026The Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton has recently completed a comprehensive review audit of its safeguarding policies and procedures, reaffirming its strong commitment to fostering a culture of safety and protection for children and vulnerable people. Commissioned by Bishop Michael McCarthy and carried out by Australian Catholic Safeguarding Ltd (ACSL), the audit assessed governance, policies, procedures, and safeguarding practices across the diocese. The review highlighted significant progress since the first external audit in 2020, noting strengthened practices, inclusive approaches, and increased vigilance in areas such as eSafety, cyber security, and elder protection.
ACSL Chief Executive Dr Ursula Stephens commended the Diocese for its leadership and ongoing investment in safeguarding, noting clear evidence of growth and maturity in how safeguarding is embedded in the life of the Church. Bishop McCarthy welcomed the findings, acknowledging the dedication of clergy, staff, and volunteers who work to ensure that parishes, ministries, and services remain places of safety, respect, and trust. He reaffirmed the Diocese’s commitment to continuous improvement and accountability, emphasising the shared responsibility to uphold the dignity of every person.
