The Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton has entered a contract to purchase The Haven at Emu Park from its long-time owners, the Sisters of St Joseph, with settlement expected to take place in December 2016.
The decision by the Rockhampton Diocese to offer to buy The Haven came following an acknowledgement that the site holds special significance to the Catholic community in Central Queensland. The Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton has had a long and cherished association with The Haven and with the Sisters of St Joseph, having held numerous school camps, conferences and retreats at the site over many decades. Many members of the Catholic community have also been fortunate enough to spend family holidays at the property.
Congregational Leader, Sr Monica Cavanagh said "The Sisters of St Joseph give thanks for the 70 years we have enjoyed The Haven. We are delighted to be entrusting it to the Diocese of Rockhampton and pray that The Haven will continue to be a source of blessing for many." Bishop Michael McCarthy, speaking on behalf of the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton, extended his sincere thanks to the Sisters for their diligent care of the site and its patrons throughout the period of their ownership of the The Haven and for the opportunity to purchase the site. "This agreement sees the continuation of a wonderul legacy for the Catholic community", he said.
